Rest area at the top of Hanalei Highway. Because of a mudslide earlier in the year, this highway was closed for much of the day, and only available a few times a day for crossing. We got lucky this first time and hit a window that allowed us to visit a rock shop on the low side but still make it back up the same day.
Lora is pointing at the sea turtles. These were incredibly beautiful, full of bright colored shells. There were more than half a dozen just in this one area of the rocks that morning. They aren't always there though, a couple of days later we didn't see any at the same time of morning.
This was one of the highlights of the trip for us - it was a lovely, peaceful, awe inspiring location with fantastic waves crashing into each other and on the rocks. Meanwhile the sea turtles were struggling to do what they do all the while.
This is the actual Queen's Bath pool (there are three different inlets or pools, the third one on the way down is the Queen's Bath). The waves change hourly here - at times the bath is totally underwater and it's very dangerous to swim in - many death have occured. At other times, like this one, it's relatively safe and the waves break on the rocks in front of it.
Waterfall on the trail down to the ocean.
The trees with the triangle shaped bases are pineapple trees!
Red crested cardinal; these are prolific on the island, though perhaps not quite as much as the wild chickens. These are not related to a regular cardinal like we might see on the mainland.
View from the rental house in Princeville, toward the west (Hanalei Bay and the Napali Coast are that direction)
