China Cove Loop at Donner Lake, CA

The flat area you see covered with snow is actually part of Donner Lake itself. Just frozen and snow covered. The water near the edge of the snow was less than a foot deep. While we sat and ate our snack, we discovered that Donner Lake is actually 238 feet in its deepest spots, and can get as deep as 328 feet. That thought was a little mind boggling.

It was magical through this part of the forest where boulders of various sizes had been covered with snow and took on an otherworldly appearance. I'm calling it the marshmallow forest. Pretty much every hike takes us to some spot that feels so surreal like we are walking in some sort of fairy tale.

Guess who tried to reach in to see if he could touch the rock under all the snow?

The neon green moss grows thick on many of the trees here.

The tree stump below was magnificent! It had all the aspects of a perfect art piece. The photo doesn't do it justice. For me, walking in the forest is like going to an art museum. There are so many unique, exceptional, and beautifully surprising things to see.
